Since its inception, Through Women’s Eyes has kept the spotlight on films by women with Florida ties. This 11th year is no exception.
Films by four women directors with Florida connections are among the 11 selected for screening at Through Women’s Eyes (TWE) on April 10 and 11 at Regal Cinemas Hollywood 20 in Sarasota. Encore screenings continue through April 18.
Janet Goldwater, who directed MRS. GUONDO'S DAUGHTER with Barbara Attie, is a New College alumna. Kate Rhodes Kennedy made her documentary, DEBUTANTE, while a graduate student at the University of Florida. Diane Mason, director of BULLFROGS ON MY MIND, is a Longboat Key resident and artistic director of Through Women’s Eyes. Iman K. Zawahry, director of UNDERCOVER, is a Panama City native and graduate of the University of Florida and Florida State University Film School.
Kennedy, Mason and Zawahry are among the eight filmmakers slated to lead post-film discussions on April 10 and 11. In addition, the TWE filmmakers – who are making a difference by creating films that increase awareness of the lives of women around the world – will mix and mingle with filmgoers at the Filmmakers’ Reception at Urban Reef on April 10 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Proceeds from the Filmmakers’ Reception benefit UNIFEM, the women’s fund at the United Nations, which supports women's empowerment and gender equality programs in more than 100 countries.
For the first time, the Gulf Coast Chapter of the US National Committee for UNIFEM is partnering with the Sarasota Film Festival to present both film programs from April 9 through 18.
Film festival and Filmmakers’ Reception tickets can be purchased online at sarasotafilmfestival.com and the SFF Box Office, 1990 Main St., Sarasota.
